Currently, I am completing a M.S. in Biology under Dr. Chris Patrick here at TAMUCC. My thesis is focused on comparing nine coastal freshwater streams I have been helping to collect data from since spring of 2017. Hurricane Harvey (Category 4) impacted our project sites in August of 2017 which presented an opportunity to investigate the responses of our streams to this disturbance event.
Specifically my day-to-day work entails picking, sorting and counting benthic invertebrates and fish down to the species level. During sampling cycles we are to collect microbial and benthic core samples, kick-net samples, water and microbial filtrate samples. We also collect in-situ habitat data such as canopy cover and channel morphology and use a YSI multimeter probe to collect water parameter data. We electroshock to record fish community data as well.
I love fishing, hunting and generally spending time outdoors and so that is usually what I am doing when I am not fulfilling my duties as a Research Assistant in the Patrick Lab.
